MEMBERSHIP

Joining MIWA

We welcome all women who would like to be part of the association and who pay the annual dues. There is no other requirement.

Who joins

Women living in Montevideo and the surrounding area who have lived a substantial part of their lives abroad. Members come from fifteen countries at present, and that mix is something we look after deliberately. A group in which everyone shares one nationality is a different thing from what MIWA is for.

If you have recently arrived in Uruguay, you are especially welcome. Helping women settle in and find people is one of the things the association was set up to do, and most of our members have been through it themselves.

Our working language is English. It is what our members have in common, and meetings, messages and events are all in English.

At the end-of-year lunch. Most members arrived in Uruguay knowing almost nobody.

What it costs

UYU 5,000
a year

That is the whole cost of membership. It is the association’s only income, and all of it is allocated to the community outreach projects that members choose and vote on. None of it pays for running MIWA.

The membership year runs 1 September to 31 August

Dues are collected in September, at the start of the year.

Joining part-way through the year is pro-rated

If you join in February you do not pay for September to January. You pay for the part of the year you are actually a member for.

Events are paid for on top of the dues

Dues do not cover the events themselves. If we are having lunch at a restaurant, you pay for your lunch. If a workshop has a materials cost, that is shared. Many events, a coffee morning or a walk, cost nothing at all.

How to join

1. Write to us

Use the form below. Tell us a little about yourself: where you are from, how long you have been in Uruguay, and what brought you here. It does not need to be long.

2. We reply

A member of the board answers personally. Expect a real email rather than an automatic one, which also means it may take a few days.

3. Come to something

You are welcome to come to an event before deciding. A Coffee & Connect is the easiest place to start. It is informal, there is no programme, and you can see whether the group suits you.

4. Join

If it does, we will tell you how to pay the dues and add you to the members’ WhatsApp group, which is where most of the day-to-day conversation happens.

Ask about joining

Tell us a little about yourself and we will write back. This form goes to one address that only the board reads.

    So we can reply.

Where you are from, how long you have been in Uruguay,
and what made you get in touch. A few lines is plenty.

    About your details

We take a plain view of this. What you send through the form goes to one email address that the board reads, and it is used to answer you. It is not stored on this website, it is not added to a list, and it is not shared with anybody.

We never publish anything about our members on this website. No names, no photographs, no contact details, no addresses. Members’ details are held only where the board needs them in order to run the association, and nowhere public.
